nyfw ss11: day one highlights!

Caitlin Surakitbanharn

new york fashion week is here!!!  the first ever Fashion's Night Out public fashion show kicked things off in a fabulous way on tuesday in lincoln center, and while the dizzying array of models coming from all directions was a bit confusing, there was not a bad seat in the house.  it went off without a hitch, the weather was breezy and warm, and SUPERmodels were there to make a splash, along with anna wintour, blake lively, leighton meester, roger federer, serena williams, and a hoard of designers (kors, wang, dvf, thakoon, dk, etc).  gisele opened the show, naomi closed it.  meow.

..and onto the shows of thursday, day one!
mandy coon: the inspiration was 'jellyfish' and it's beautiful.  the pieces are light, airy, and reminiscent of a breezy day at the beach.  i absolutely die for that coral colored full length dress and would have loved to see that color incorporated elsewhere, but otherwise really love the collection.  the blacks somehow don't seem heavy, and the whites somehow don't seem flimsy.  and the hair is spot-on!

rachel comey: the inspiration..how to dress for heat without looking a hot mess.  after the scorching summer we just had, it's a valid inspiration, and the prints amazing!  a majority of the show was black, white, and muted pinks and neutrals, but the prints brought a needed pop to the collection and added feminine touch.  that black and white printed shift is to die for.

christian sirano: i've loved christian since his projrun days, and i think he's uber talented.  was this is best collection? no. are there some beautiful pieces? yes.  there seems to be a big Mediterranean influence here, and the opening look of nicely tailored white pants and the camel leather jacket alluded to greatness, but the show fell just a bit flat with the overuse of the same patterns and completely and utterly unwearable evening looks.  i do love the chic little draped chiffon cocktail dress and the effortless strapless maxi dress(the subtly fitted bust-line to that is genius), but overall, i'd say he's done better.

day two highlights up tomorrow, hope everyone had a fun evening out for Fashion's Night Out, and prabal gurung shows his collection tomorrow as well!  can't wait! love nyfw!!!
