style + fashion

the art of getting dressed.

pre-fall, 2011

Caitlin Surakitbanharn

ladies and gents, pre-fall 2011 is upon us.  no, you didn't misread that. yes, we're still in the heat (or bitter cold) of the fall/winter 2010 season, and we're already showing for pre-fall 2011?  it's true.  the fashion set just cannot wait for next fall, no matter what season we're currently in.  next fall (whenever that may be) is like our birthdays, christmas, and new years all wrapped up into one...it's that exciting.

jason wu:

jason wu continues to woo me.  (i couldn't resist).  his spring 2011 collection had me at hello, and now... that satin trouser and tuxedo bow-tie blouse is EVERYTHING.  it's love at first sight, it's lust, it's a 60 year marriage... it's fresh, hip, and now..and it's timeless and classic.  i. am. dying. for that look.  it's flawless with the hair and the glasses, and even the pumps.  it's perfect.  and again, wu continues to walk the fine line of danger with his nipple-baring sheer tops (which i think are fantastic, yet i'm unsure how i'd wear them), and the silk day dresses in muted tones are perfect for the transition from summer to early fall.  once again, he may be known for his cocktail and evening wear, but his pants kill me.  seriously, i'm still dying over the tuxedo look.  i can't get over it.

dkny:

donna karan is a classic, iconic new york designer who has paved the way for so many fashionistas, young and old, and not only that..she's an incredible woman.  she is the kind of woman i hope to be when i grow up, but i have to admit, i've never been overly enamored with the collections she shows.  i don't know why..i should like her. i love minimalism, i love a well cut jersey dress...but that's neither here nor there. fact is, i'm not usually overwhelmed by her stuff.  however..for pre-fall she showed a small collection of "casual" before she showed her classic line..and hello lover. the official uniform of the "cool girl" has arrived.  the pieces of perfectly oversized, yet fitted where it counts, the slouchy boots are perfect, and i'm loving, loving, loving the fur scarves! and the layered belts just tie everything together, adding definition to the body without making the look seem bound.

oscar de la renta:

i always love oscar.  i'm always amazed at his ability to put out almost 60 looks at every showing (resort, spring, pre-fall, fall, and not to mention..the insane bridal collections.  the man is a workhorse).  this pre-fall collection has brilliant use of electric color... the pops of neon pink are genius amongst the dark neutrals, which are all rich in texture, and i cannot even imagine how chic the gunmetal grey beaded gown with the unexpected pink bow belt would be at a black tie event.  so major.  however...even more unexpected were my two favorite looks of the show: the two fur vests paired with whip-straight leggings (a pair in leather, no less!) paired with fabulous ankle boots.  both looks are the cool, downtown girl with a smattering of lux, uptown Oscar-ness.  i normally love oscar's evening looks the most, as his day looks are generally more for the uptown gal...but these looks...all day, baby.  paired with the sunglasses, strong lip, and chic chignon... sign me up, please.  i'll take them both!
