Resort 2012 - Calvin Klein Collection & Marc Jacobs

Caitlin Surakitbanharn

can you believe it's Resort collection time?  every may/june, designers give us a little taste of what our winter get-a-ways will look like, and this weekend, it's time to pick and choose what will be populating your suitcase!  up first, for your viewing pleasure... ultra chic, minimalistic Calvin Klein Collection and then some very light, unexpected Marc Jacobs!

Calvin Klein Collection

after seeing 'The September Issue,' i always wonder what Anna Wintour thinks about Fransisco Costa's collections.  we all remember when she cattily remarked to Stefano Pilati ..."Not feeling for color, are we?"  however, no one can deny the absolute genius of Costa and his fresh, simple, and sexy take on minimalism.  experimenting with weight and sparkle instead of color, Costa gave us skirt suits in white with a pencil thin belt, an updated, sleeveless pantsuit..again belted in a razor skinny fashion, modest yet insanely sexy keyhole cutouts, and stunning halter evening gowns with the most delicate diamante straps you'll ever find.  the suits manage to look young and hip with the flattering, body-skimming cut...wall-street women ought take some notes there...and the mix of sheer and opaque in the separates is spot on for an island evening.

Marc Jacobs

a complete 180 from his severe, s&m-esque fall 2011 collection, Marc Jacobs' resort looks are light, playful, floral, and even metallic at times!  the whip straight, calf length polka dot skirts and dresses are replaced with micro mini shorts in muted beiges and blues and tank dresses littered with metallic flower appliqués.  the sweet, girlish oxfords and flat sandals give the collection even more youth, and sweetheart neckline frocks, nipped at the waist with white belts, add sophistication but still give the air of a gal on vacation.  the matchy-matchy baroque and flower tops/bottoms were a bit much at times, but all was forgiven at the sight of the last two looks - a frothy pink tulle skirt with neon pink flowers (paired brilliantly with a slate striped short sleeve sweatshirt) and an equally ethereal seafoam green tulle dress...both paired with matching tinted PVC heels.  Jacobs continues to redefine himself, keeping us all eternally guessing (and interested!).
