style file: what's in my beauty bag!

Caitlin Surakitbanharn

i always love seeing those "what's in my bag" stories in magazines, and even more...when beauty professionals reveal what they use every day to make their clients look fabulous.  i'm by NO means a beauty professional, but i have a really great team of them that have helped me find the best products out there, so i thought i'd share some of my favorites!  first up: face!

(do you like my little staged photoshoot of products? i'm such a dork!)

moving from left to right (sorta...):

CeraVe  Hydrating Cleanser: recommended by my dermatologist, this face cleanser is gentle but effective.  it's light and refreshing, removes most make-up (as long as it's not Kim Kardashian levels of make-up...), and doesn't dry my skin out.  i have suffered from acne, and this cleanser is part of my regimen for clear skin.  it works wonders and doesn't irritate my sensitive skin at all.  and easy on the wallet! (available at drugstores)

CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion, AM: another suggestion from my derm, this is my daily facial moisturizer, and bonus...it contains SPF 30!  again, gentle on my sensitive and acne prone skin, it smells AMAZING, and protects me from the sun.  i also use a retin-A gel, which makes my skin even more sun sensitive, so SPF is not even an option.  (available at drugstores)

Cortizone-10 Easy Relief w/ Aloe: cortisone is useful pretty much all year round.  it relieves itching associated with bug bites in summer time, dry skin & rashes from itchy wool in winter time...but it has other applications too!  i use it (very carefully) to reduce under eye puffiness and also if i do get a stray blemish...a light application lessens redness and reduces swelling.  this is one of my absolute must haves! (available at drugstores)

Davines Authentic Replenishing Butter: i've raved about this stuff before, but it's truly a god sent.  this super rich body/face/hair butter is completely organic, smells amazing (please, all Davines products do), and has a long list of uses.  for my face, i use it when i'm feeling particularly dry in a certain area, if i've had a little to much sun that day to avoid facial peeling, and actually, i use it as my (almost) every night eye cream.  i use it on my dry elbows, knees, and feet too..but that's a whole other story!  (check davines.com for availability)

Q-Tips Precision Tips: these are new from Q-Tips, and they have a fabulous pointed little edge, made specifically for beauty applications!  they are perfect for cleaning up the lines of your lipstick, erasing mascara smudges, tidying up nail polish, and are incredible for help in achieving the elusive smokey-eye.  a new must have! (available at drugstores)

Cle de Peau Beaute Concealer: this stick concealer is the mother of all concealers.  yes, it costs a fortune (a cool $70 per stick), but there is literally no better imperfection hider out there.  if i was on a dessert island and could only have 3 things...this would be one of them.  it goes on smooth (i recommend using a concealer brush for application precision), doesn't feather, blends in beautifully, and stays all day.  it hides blemishes, under-eye circles, scars, uneven skin tone...or anything else your skin can come up with.  it is truly the best on the market.  (available online & in-store: bergdorfgoodman.com & neimanmarcus.com)

Maybelline Define-a-Lash Mascara: i love mascara!  i don't wear much make-up, especially on my eyes, but mascara is a must have.  right now i'm all about Define-a-Lash..i love the applicator brush!  it's contours make for amazing definition, volume, and length, and the pure black is VERY black and VERY dramatic!  i'm not a big believer in expensive mascara...i just can't bring myself to drop $24 on mascara when i can get the same, if not better, results with $7 stuff from Duane Reade!  (available at drugstores)

NARS Laguna/Orgasm Bronzer/Blush Duo: NARS Orgasm is the blush that every beauty editor and beauty junkie raves about...with good reason.  it is the most universally flattering shade of blush, without a doubt.  however, in the summer time, i like to mix it with Laguna bronzer before applying to the apples of my cheeks... it gives a warmer tone to my skin (i have an olive skin tone...i wouldn't suggest mixing like this if you're undertones are pink!) (available at sephora.com)

Laura Mercier Pressed Mineral Powder: if you aren't into foundation, this pressed mineral powder is perfect! it offers great coverage, but doesn't cake on your face..or even look like you're wearing makeup!  it's also healthier for your skin, allowing it to breathe, and contains SPF 15 for extra protection.  it truly leaves your face looking flawless! (available at nordstroms.com)

Anastasia Brow Gel: i LOVE a strong brow, and this brow gel defines eyebrows, makes them even more bold, and also keeps stray eyebrow hairs in place all day.  darkening your brows isn't for everyone...it's a very strong look, but they do offer the same gel in lighter colors and in clear! (available at sephora.com)

Laura Mercier Secret Finish Mattifying: if you have an oily t-zone, run..don't walk..to get this secret weapon.  it's a light gel that goes on under or over your makeup to control oil all day long..and it actually works!!!  i have an oily t-zone...no doubt about it, and i worship this Laura Mercier gem!  (available at nordstroms.com)

Tom Ford Private Blend Lipstick: since i don't wear much make-up on my eyes, i love to wear lipstick!  Tom Ford makes the most luxurious colors that last all day long and really makes heads turn!  it also, despite being so color rich, doesn't dry your lips out!  i absolutely always have one of his lipsticks in my handbag at all times.  i prefer Pure Pink, Cherry Lush, or Ginger Fawn, but speak to the Tom For Beaute associate to find the right color for you! (available at saksfifthavenue.com)

Laura Mercier Lipgloss in Plum Noir: i prefer lipsticks, but i love this vampy color for when i'm feeling dramatic (i mean..when i'm feeling MORE dramatic)!  it's a very strong color, but sometimes you just need to make a statement!  (available at nordstroms.com)

not pictured: 8 hours of sleep and 64 oz of water everyday, for radiant skin.
