eccentric elegance - Dries Van Noten Fall 2011

Caitlin Surakitbanharn

Dries Van Noten is always the kind of collection that needs to marinate.  the first time you watch it, you're intrigued but unsure.  the second time, you want more.  the third time, you start thinking of how these pieces could fit into your wardrobe, and by the fourth time you watch a DVN shows, you're totally obsessed and you start dreaming in Dries.  that's just kind of how it works.

the fall collection was a show in eccentricity at it's finest.  the Dries woman is chic as hell, no doubt, but she has a little twist to the story she tells with her clothes.  she has more to say than "isn't the cut of my dress fabulous?"  she wants to show you her furry clutch purse, her patterned socks with her amazing amazing amazing lucite heeled wedge, open-toed mule sandal shoe situation.  and the Dries woman doesn't really think her sleeves MUST be the same length..it's just an option she can play with.  but damn, she loves patterns, and she loves gold, and she loves fur.... so much so that she wants the lapels of her jackets lined with it.  i mean, like i said, the Dries woman is chic as hell.

one sleeve is dolman sleeve, the other a fitted bell sleeve (see next to pictures for a better look).  the Dries woman plays with conventional proportion...

the ponytails are so chic.

(far east opulence, non?)

the Dries shoe situation haunts me - i saw these babies at Barneys last weekend and i can't stop thinking about them and how they're so  perfect and so chic and how they'd go with everything i own.  atleast i think so.

the Dries collection is so cool because it offers up a lot of what Fall is about this year.  luxury, opulence, a new kind of old-world rich.  the patterns, the fur, the fabrics...very old world, very uptown...but then paired with messy hair, youthful cuts, and realllllly amazing shoes....it becomes relevant again.

and the mixing of patterns of brilliant.  aggressive, even.  as if the shoes weren't enough, the patterns bring Dries to a new level of covetable.
